The developing market for liquid crystal display technology, for which ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) have great potential, means that it is important to understand their switching properties. We aim to investigate the dynamics of the formation and evolution of the domains which occur during switching of FLC devices. This is of primary importance to the understanding of mechanisms which can be used to form a grey scale in a FLC display, by using a mixture of bright and dark domains. It is also of direct relevance to general FLC devices, where the switching process is important. We will use a combination of stroboscopic and spectroscopic polarised microscopy to analyse the domain sizes etc during the switching process. We will also be able to gain information on the director profile which develops within a domain during the switching process. These studies will be combined with modelling of the FLC switching process in order to increase understanding. We will also investigate the ways in which the domains occurring in switching may be controlled, including the use of graded driving voltages in a FLC cell, and by the deliberate introduction of an array point defects in order to nucleate domain formation.
