The objective of this research is to investigate a novel electrically small high Tc superconducting coplanar antenna and its arrays. Our preliminary experiments have shown that this antenna has better performance than the more usual electrically-small antennas such as the dipole, loop, helix and the microstrip H antenna . The performance is superior in many respects including: size reduction, lower operating frequency but relatively larger bandwidth than H antenna , circuit simplicity and integration, antenna conformality, production and manufacture. The experimental aspects of the work will concentrate initially on thick-film realisations of the antennas because, at present, larger areas are possible than with thin films, and therefore lower frequencies are attainable. The following aspects will be investigated theoretically and experimentally: (a) input impedance and matching; (b) radiation pattern and radiation efficiency; (c) current distribution; (d) HF/VHF operation (f<100 MHz) with limited film area (100 x 100 mm2); (e) design formulae for industry; (f) increasing owrking bandwidth using multiple identical antennas technique for both a single antenna and arrays.
