Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objectives will be to perform an in-depth study of deformation micromechanics and molecular, morphological and macroscopic properties for two classes of polymeric material, namely rubber-toughened glassy polymers and rubber-toughened semicrystalline polymers. Studies of toughened acrylic materials and toughened polypropylenes will form the basis of the programme, together with rubber-toughened grades of polycarbonate/rubber-toughened nylons. The materials will be fully characterised and subjected to conventional mechanical testing. These latter measurements will be complemented by performing detailed examinations of plastic zones formed at the tips of sub-critically grown cracks and by carrying out simultaneous mechanical testing and small angle x-ray scattering. In this way, the sequence of steps in the initial deformation processes which lead to toughness via macroscopic yielding will be identified. We will also evaluate the significance of plastic-zone size and geometry corrections in the determination of fracture toughness and fracture energy from standard 3-point bend fracture tests, since a recent theoretical treatment indicates that such corrections may be important, even when currently accepted geometry criteria for valid testing are satisfied.
