Summary on Grant Application Form
A new test facility will be designed and built for the purpose of condensation heat-transfer measurements for new, alternative, environment-friendly refrigerants. The new apparatus will be used to make extensive measurements on the condensation of HCFC-123, the most likely medium-term replacement for CFC-11, on horizontal, integral-fin tubes. The tests will cover effects of tube geometry and material, vapour shear, non-condensing gas and oil contamination. In addition, baseline tests will be done with CFC-11. The tests will provide important data for the design of condensers for use with new refrigerants. In addition, the results will add to the existing data base for condensation on finned tubes and will be used in an ongoing program to develop general models for predicting heat-transfer coefficients for condensation on finned tubes.
