Summary on Grant Application Form
The research is concerned with homogeneous and composite viscoelastic materials used in dynamic environments. It can be considered in two parts. The first part concentrates on the development of new procedures for establishing the complex moduli of homogeneous viscoelastic materials subject to combined loads in terms of Master Curves using the frequency-temperature superposition principle. These data will then be integrated into Finite Element codes for predicting structure borne noise characteristics of elements of simple and complex geometry. Following validation using controlled experiments, the techniques will be applied to braided viscoelastic materials subject to combined loadings including pressure forces. The ability to predict the behaviour of pressurised elements such as seals and couplings using the global complex moduli determined from the combined loading tests will represent the second and final part of the work.
