The proposed programme will continue to develop conductor fabrication processes for the preparation of 5-10 metre lengths of superconducting tape or wire, using a complex series of mechanical deformation and annealing stages. We intend to achieve critical current performance over these longer lengths approximately equal to the values already achieved in Oxford on short samples (50-100 MA/m at 77K and 500 MA/m2 at 4K). These values will be sufficient to make useful demonstrators, and we will construct prototype magnet inserts and motor or generator devices using coils wound from the superconducting wires. In order to make these demonstrators we will have to develop several important techniques, including the choice and processing of materials in multilayer windings, strategies for supporting and protecting coils and improvement of thermal cycling resistance. We will, in parallel, continue to develop our ceramic-on-ceramic samples which also have attractive superconducting properties, and are extremely robust.
