The question is how and why changes in composition of semiconducting oxide sensor materials change the selectivity to different gases. Therefore, the study will compare behaviour of materials with composition systematically altered, where preliminary studies have also indicated a systematic change in relative selectivity. A range of gases will be studied, chosen both for their technological interest and because they provide a range of chemistry with which to probe the surface: CO, CH4, H2, H2S, NH3, NO2. The concentration range in air of interest for the technological application of the devices is 1 to 104 part per million. Materials will be characterised by adsorption isotherm measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Measurements of electrical conductivity changes correlated with sensitive high-resolution mass-spectrometric analysis of desorption products and surface infra-red spectroscopy are proposed. The proposal builds upon previous work of the principal applicant, in which the gas sensing characteristics of a wide range of oxide materials were surveyed. The study addresses a fascinating problem in he surface chemistry of materials, which is at the same time of great technological significance given the increasing requirement for reliable and inexpensive gas sensing devices.
