To obtain self-arrest of fretting fatigue cracks in experiments on a biaxial fatigue machine and to develop a theoretical criterion for such arrest.To develop a model of crack initiation and explain the effects of fretting parameters as observed experimentally.To correlate 1 and 2 to produce design guidelines.
