Summary on Grant Application Form
Future magnetics based technologies will require components that are both smaller and faster. I have recently developed an optical pump-probe technique that gives access to dynamical magnetic processes on picosecond time scales. I now propose to use this technique to study dynamical processes in nanostructured magnetic materials. These are the materials that will be used in future devices and they provide new opportunities for experimental studies. Through the manipulation of structure, idealised conditions can be obtained in which physical mechanisms of interest can be isolated and studied. For example, picosecond magnetisation reversal and thermal magnetic relaxation will be studied in magnetic nanostructures, and, transient spin populations will be induced in magnetic and non-magnetic materials so that the relevant spin relaxation times can be determined. The results of the latter studies will be of great importance for the emerging field of spin electronics. The programme will therefore provide new information about a number of technologically important processes and postgraduate training in an important new experimental technique.
