Quantum dots are nanometre-sized artificial atoms made out of semiconductor materials. They can be deposited on a substrate directly in the growth of an inorganic semiconductor. Alternatively, they can be formed in solution by techniques of organic chemistry. This proposal concerns a detailed investigation of the physical properties of quantum dots. Most of the experiments will be carried out on single quantum dots in order to remove the inhomogeneous broadening. The experiments will determine the properties of electrons and excitons in quantum dots. This information will guide applications of quantum dots for photonics, spintronics, and quantum information processing. In particular, quantum dots will be used in a novel cavity design as the gain medium for a tunable laser, and magnetic quantum dots will be designed with controllable electronic g-factors to store, filter and manipulate spin. Finally, the radiative emission characteristics will be manipulated by positioning individual dots in a tunable namo-cavity for prototype single-photon sources.
