To date my research into near-stability K-isomeric states has spurred much theoretical activity in our understanding of the quantum mechanical K-Selection rule, the competition between nuclear single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, and also on nuclear residual interactions. With the currently-evolving field of neutron-rich radioactive-ion beams a unique opportunity has been provided to make significant advances in my study of the nuclear force, under extreme conditions, far from the valley of nuclear stability. In addition by populating K-isomeric states in the far from stability neutron-rich nuclei fundamental information on the isotopic abundances of the elements in our universe will also be obtained. This is because the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process proceeds along a path which passes through the neutron-rich K-isomeric nuclei which I am proposing to study with the SPIRAL radioactive beams. These reactions, which have previously only occurred in the inter-stellar medium, will be accessible for the first time with neutron-rich radioactive beams. The success of this project, and most of the other proposed SPIRAL radioactive-beam projects, relies on the segmented detector development programme that I am presently working on at the University of Liverpool.
