Waves are extremely important in many fields, including Geophysics, acoustics, sonar, radar, noise and surface waves on water. Although engineers have many tools for predicting wave behaviour, it becomes very difficult to resolve the details of wave fields when the waves are very short. This is of particular significance in electro-magnetic waves and radar, where the waves hitting an object 1 Os of metres across may themselves be only millimetres long. Such resolution is many orders of magnitude beyond the most powerful computers currently available. The proposed research is intended to extend finite and infinite methods of modelling such wave behaviour so that short waves canbe predicted in detail. Various methods will be used, but essentially all resolve down to building more of our knowledge of the wave behaviour into the finite and infinite elements, so that they are more efficient. The benefits are enormous, from better prediction of wave transmission through rock, and thus more accurate determination of hydrocarbon reserves, to better prediction of the acoustics of buildings, less noisy vehicles, and the accurate prediction or radar cross sections. The results and algorithms would also be applicable in many other fields.
