Summary on Grant Application Form |
In recent ultra high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) work we demonstrated that arrays of Ti02 nanodots can be self-assembled on Ni(110) by oxidizing pre-deposited metallic titanium. The nanodot arrays, which co-exist with other Ti02 structures, have potential as model nanosensors and nanocatalyst assemblies. Here we propose to investigate the structure of Ti02 nanodots by measuring their XANES spectra and comparing these data with theoretical calculations. XPEEM would be used to selectively measure the XANES from the nanodots. These measurements would be carried out using beamline 7.3.1.1 at the Advanced Light Source during an extended research visit. Subsequent XPEEM experiments would be used to investigate the orientation of a probe molecule, formate, on the nanodot arrays and other low dimensional Ti02 structures using the azimuthal incidence angle polarisation dependence of the C and O K-edge NEXAFS spectra. It may also be possible to use the different formate adsorption geometries to provide the contrast mechanism in the XPEEM images. In a third set of experiments submonolayer gold would be deposited on the Ti02/Ni(110) surface to establish whether the metal nucleates preferentially at the nnnnrintc nr at nna of tha nthar Tin, On ir.ti irac
