Summary on Grant Application Form |
A unique analytical electrom microscopy facility will be developed at Daresbury Laboratories that will be made generally available within two years to researchers in academic, industry and government laboratories. The SuperSTEM instruments envisaged will incorporate recently developed Cs aberration correction technology, annular dark field detection, ultra-stable specimen stages and state-of-the-art Electron Energy Loss Spectrosocpy, The final instruments will provide sub-angstrom spatial resolution simultaneously with spectral resolution at least as good as the current Daresbury synchrotron. One of the SuperSTEM instruments will be accessible remotely over the internet and will be able to cope with several specimens per day.The motivation for creating the SuperSTEM facility is to enable the structural and chemical analysis of technologically important materials and structures on a size scale that cannot be achieved with current instrumentation. Examples of these materials include heterogeneous catalysts, novel nanoengineered composite materials (e.g. for sensors, optoelectronic devices and display technology) as well as nanostructured mechanical materials such as hard surface coatings.
