|
The aim of this work network is to allow the opportunity for recognised experts in the understanding of grain boundaries to investigate further the concept of grain boundary engineering. The activities of the network will facilitate advancement in the understanding through modelling of the relation between boundary structure, composition and fracture. There will be special inputs from groups interested in grain boundary diffusion and precipitation, and in the effects of irradiation on grain boundaries. Validation of the above modelling will be accomplished using a variety of the most powerful microscope techniques available.The proposal seeks to maximise the exchange of ideas and personnel within the international grain boundary community, and to enhance the reputations of UK scientists working within this community. This will be achieved through a series of workshops, exchanges, videoconferences, and a website. There will be considerable industrial involvement. The activity is intended to lay the foundation for a group of larger proposals to be made later to NATO, EC and the wider international community.
