Summary on Grant Application Form
It is widely accepted that only on LaA103 substrates is it straightforward to grow high performance T1-HTS films for microwave applications. This means that device design is rendered more complex by the anisotropy of dielectric properties in the substrate. However, in Oxford we have recently shown that low Rs films can be grown cubic MgO substrates, although the conditions for reliable deposition are not yet well established. In the proposed project we intend to study the growth processes of T1-HTS films on MgO and buffered sapphire substrates in order to determine the processing conditions and protocols by which reliable deposition of high performance T1-HTS films may be achieved. The properties of these films will be demonstrated by the comparison of the performance of microwave devices on LaA103 and MgO or buffered substrates.
