Contamination of objects such as floors by radioactive and toxic materials could be prevented by the use of impermeable, corrosion resistant surfaces which are not available at present. This research is a continuation of a 3 year project carried out under CASE 95562556 on the use of high power diode laser techniques for sealing tile grouts in order to provide an impermeable surface. The results of this early work show the necessary promise to justify detailed research and development. The construction sector has been identified as a promising area for the application of this particular technology. Initially it is proposed to study the characteristics of the interaction between lasers and building materials. This will be followed by the developments and optimisation of grout sealing and removal technology and a prototype system for field applications. The modelling of laser materials processing and relevant construction process will be undertaken. The use of laser technology represents the first application of high power diode lasers in the construction process. The work has potential to provide entirely new methods of producing sealed finishes appropriate to cleanroom technology and to nuclear/toxic waste containment. The research would bring together 4 industrial partners and 2 academic departments.
