Summary on Grant Application Form
When steel is drained from a ladle the molten slag (covering the steel) comes in contact with the surface of the refractory where it forms a glaze with some of the liquid slag percolating into the pores. When these ladle glazes come in contact with the next batch of steel, liquid slag globules are detached and are entrained in the metal flow where they react with the metal and change in composition. These glazes are a significant source of non-metallic inclusions, which have a deleterious effect on the mechanical strength of the steel. Little is known about ladle glazes, how they are formed and how they are incorporated into the metal as inclusions. This proposal seeks to improve our knowledge about ladle glazes and the mechanisms responsible for their formation and entrainment into the metal by measuring (1) the viscosity and melting temperatures of glazes and dependence on chemical composition; (2) metal/glaze interfacial tension which probably controls the mechanisms responsible for the infiltration and entrainment of glazes; (3) steel cleanliness by EBBM and (4) examination of the refractory/glaze interface and its effect on (a) glaze entrainment and (b) protection of refractories from erosion.
