Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project aims to develop and validate novel methods ofr the testing of coatings for constructional steels. The work extends current research on the performance of coil-coated cladding (funded as GR/K52102) and will be generally be applicable to other coated structural steels. Key manufacturing issues in coil coatings relate to development of improved chromate-free systems with enhanced performance at cut-edges and increased damage tolerance while end-users require sealing treatments to reduce cut-edge and other defect induced corrosion. However, development of these is hindered by by the poor quality (realism) and slowness of existing accelerated tests. Moreover, no test currently exists to determine corrosion induced damage, for example changes in paint adhesion (leading to disbondment) and electrochemical changes on a sufficiently local scale (i.e.millimetres). In order to address these issues a 3-strong research team will be recruited. The PDRA will refine laboratory corrosion tests to increase their acceleration factor, use a micro-galvanic cell model of cut-edge corrosion to evaluate the performance of novel chromatic-free systems and study strategies for sealing at cut-edges and defects. The two students will, respectively, study localised scannig electrochemical impedance and sratch adhesion measurements for the testing of local coating disbondment.
