Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary objective of this study is to follow up our discovery that electron emission occurs from planar amorphous silicon (a-Si) films at low fields. This advance is important because it enables a whole range of a-Si technology to be brought to bear on the objectives of obtaining efficient and controllable planar emitter arrays. An equally important objective is the study to understand the fundamental mechanisms that control the electronic field emission mechanism in amorphous thin films. Preliminary measurements on amorphous carbon, a-Si and amorphous silicon carbide have shown that it is possible to extract electrons from flat smooth films at relatively low fields (1-5). It is proposed by using appropriately doped layers of a-Si and its alloys to deposit optimised thin film emission structures. We will concentrate on the a-Si and its alloys whose properties are well understood to construct the large area, low threshold, field emitter structures. Both materials are currently used industrially in thin film devices for addressing pixels in large area flat panel displays. Schottky back contacts and space charge induced band bending via three terminal device structures will be used to control the emission. A small demonstrator based on electron field emission will be built.
