Preliminary work has already shown the large magnitude of the residual stresses in Ti/DiC test-pieces in the as-processed state. It is vital to develop an understanding of the generation and relaxation of these stresses through the manufacturing route if real aeroengine designers are to exploit this technology. In this project it is proposed to measure the stresses within the reinforced and unreinforced zones within sub-scale composite blings as a function of manufacturing and subsequent processing and to develop finite element models to predict these fields.One of the key issues is the intelligent definition of the manufacturing process to limit the damaging effects of these stresses through the process route and to optimise them in the final product. The development of finite element models for internal stress prediction under processing conditions will be an important design tool for process management. Without reliable measurements such models cannot be reliable. Furthermore, the study of the effect of fatigue on the residual stress level of test-pieces will increase our understanding of the implications of these stresses over the lifetime of the component.
