Summary on Grant Application Form
The rheology of various powder batches will be measured as a function of aggregate and binder particle size distribution, liquid additives (water content, deflocculants, accelerators, retarders and setting agents) and temperature. The microstructures of selected dried but unfired castables will be examined, in particular for porosity and pore size distribution. Fired microstructures will then be examined and correlated to the processing and green microstructure. High-temperature strength and corrosion resistance will, in turn, be related to the fired microstructure. Systems examined will initially be those used in current commercial applications based on alumina grain with alumina and submicron silica binders. This will provide a scientific base on which to develop alumina-based and completely new zeolite-bonded systems with improved microstructures and properties. Aggregates examined will include alumina, zirconia, spinel, mullite and non oxides such as graphite and SiC. The possibility of adjusting systems to improve recyclability will also be examined.
