Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to support a project to develop at the SRS Daresbury and at the ESRF Grenoble, techniques & equipment for the non-destructive synchrotron strain scanning, and to make measurements on samples of generic interest to the aerospace industry.X-rays from conventional laboratory sources are commonly used to measure residual strains, but are restricted, because of strong absorption, to surface measurements. Neutrons are used routinely for internal measurements but their use near-surface is limited by instrumental aberrations and spatial resolution. In this project intense, high energy, monochromatic synchrotron radiation will be used in transmission and reflection, using adapted neutron techniques, to determine with high spatial resolution residual stress fields within aerospace samples and through near surface regions where stress fields can be critical and steep.
