Summary on Grant Application Form
In recent studies, considerable interest has been shown in the behaviour and design of transversely stiffened girder webs subject to shear loading (7, 8, 10, 11) or to combined shear and direct in-plane loading (12). In the models presented, the behaviour of a simply supported plate with a single intermediate stiffener subject to in-lane forces was studied using elastic critical buckling analyses as well as non-linear elasto-plastic finite element analyses. However, none of the aforementioned models take into account the combined effect of in-plane shear, compressive and bending forces that a stiffener may be subjected to nor the direct application of a compressive load on the ends of the stiffener. The aim of this research project is to develop a comprehensive design model which will take into account all these effects. In particular, attention will be given to the key parameters that are relevant to the design of such components, ie? stiffener rigidity? panel aspect ratio? panel slenderness? initial imperfections in the panel and stiffener.Parametric studies will be carried out to examine the effect of the above factors on the behaviour of bearing stiffeners. It is envisaged that the results of such studies will lead to a simplified and economic design model which will be compatible with current design codes.
