Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research project will study the theory of systems in which the motion of the electrons and the structure are intimately linked. It brings together studies of a number of systems where the interplay between electronic and atomic structure has important experimental consequences, and which lend themselves to treatment by a common set of theoretical tools. The systems to be studied are: current flow and tip-sample interaction in scanning tunnelling microscopy and other scanning probe microscopies; zero-point motion of implanted muons in organic materials; charge transfer of electrons through organic materials, including conducting polymers, absorbed molecules at surfaces, and model biological systems. The problems will be addressed by a combination of first-principles molecular dynamics and electron transport calculations.Key Words: Condensed Matter Physics, Surfaces, Materials, Polymers, Biorganic Chemistry, Nanotechnology.
