Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will investigate a software architecture and components of a virtual reality system for large-scale industrial applications. Large-scale in this context means models which are of a complexity one or two orders of magnitude greater than those currently handled by VR systems. Specific issues to be addressed include new algorithms for handling complex models (culling, level of detail processing, adaptive control for maintaining frame rates and a sense of presence), intelligent navigation and manipulation (including model building) using model-based knowledge, and assessment of alternative interface technologies (immersive helmet, large-screen stereo, and autostereoscopic displays). The system will be designed to support a range of demanding applications in a generic manner, permitting software re-use and consistency of interface techniques across different domains. Demonstrator applications, for CAD and design review of large-scale process plants, will be developed and used to assess the results of the research.
