Summary on Grant Application Form
New instrumental techniques in pulsed NQR spectroscopy will be developed and tested, including multiple-pulse generation and summation of long echo trains to improve sensitivity, frequency sweep and sum methods to detect broad lines, two-dimensional and NQR correlation spectroscopy to measure inhomogeneities due to stress, disorder, or impurities, adiabatic pulse sequences to reduce the adverse effects of RF field inhomogeneity inportable probes, phase cycling and gradiometric methods to eliminate spurious responses, and broad-band delay-line probes working at low RF powers to provide an operating frequency range from 0.5 to 200 MHz. As a consequence we intend to demonstrate the feasibility of producing a low power, miniaturised NQR spectrometer with a wide frequency range but of relatively low cost, the performance of which will be tested on a number of model compounds closely related to real materials of industrial importance.
