Research and development into the issues concerned with software change, application configuration and the creation of change management strategies, of ensuring consistency, integrity and cohesiveness in versions and revisions of distributed processes, information and data, throughout Open Distributed Systems Architectures. Progress: There have been two main areas of progress. The first has involved a review and analysis of different kinds of distributed system, examining both requirements and technologies. This includes work on ODP (international standards for Open Distributed Processing), CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture from OMG), DCE (Distributed Computing Environment from OSF) and ANSAware (from APMs ANSA project). The second has involved the development of an example distributed system, based on currency dealing, which has been implemented using different distribution mechanisms, including ANSAware. Our current assessment of managing change in such distributed environments, the primary focus of ODISSEY, is that for business systems the major problem is persistent data. A subsidiary area of work has concerned contributions to the ODP standardisation activities. Apart from monitoring and commenting on ODP developments within BSI, contributions have also been made within ISO to work on ODP and distributed database systems, which may result in new material for ODP documents. It should be noted that the original research programme for ODISSEY has been modified to take account of the withdrawal of Norwich Union from the project. This change is not considered detrimental to the aims of the project because the Norwich Union management had requirements and expectations which differed significantly from the other partners. Prior to the withdrawal, analysis of Norwich Union distributed systems had identified both management and technical problems that would have hindered the research.
