Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to create and equip the Nanomaterials Characterisation Suite (NCS), a shared facility designed to provide a substantial boost to world-leading activities at the University of Sheffield (UoS) in EPSRC-funded research areas of: Photonic Materials; Quantum Optics and Information; Quantum Devices, Components and Systems; Light Matter Interaction and Optical Phenomena; Solar Technology; Polymer Materials.

We request funds for a versatile imaging spectroscopic ellipsometer; a high stability, high resolution, atomic force microscope; and, if the additional funding is available, an additional item, a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser for nano-imaging and nano-spectroscopy.

This investment will underpin our world-class programmes on research and development of nanomaterials. It will provide researchers with access to state-of-the-art instruments for nanoscale structural and optical analysis of broad classes of thin films and nano-structured materials. This will significantly expand and complement our existing capabilities in these areas and enable new scientific breakthroughs.
