Pervasive computing in the Modern Built Environment requires ubiquitous communication between devices, with low cost of implementation, low latency, and high aggregated bandwidth. Many applications, such as high definition multi-channel digital video, require bandwiths of many hundred Mb/s. This project will prove we can deliver this within homes and buildings without new wiring. The end results will be an environment where information can be obtained anywhere there is a power point / be it video, phone, internet, or output from a monitoring device for health or environment.Initial experiments undertaken by Artimi indicate that it might be possible to transmit UWB (Ultra Wideband) pulses along mains wiring. UWB radio is a recently developed wireless technology with performance potentially 1,000 x better than bluetooth, and 100 x better than 802.11 WiFi.Artimi's experiments have also indicated the possiblity of UWB impulses traveling as soliton waves over power cables. A soliton pulse is a solitary wave which propagates through a nonlinear medium with constant velocity, undistorted profile, and conserved energy and momentum. If Artimi's hypothesis is verified in this project, its impact on the communications technology could be comparable to that of the optical soliton over optical fibres.The proposed investigation is the part of a full proposal which is invited to submit to the DTI Technology Programme (Technology Priority: Pervasive Computing, incl. Networks and Sensors) by a consortium consisting of: Artimi Ltd, Queen Mary / University of London (QMUL) and COE PLC. The project will research the operating parameters and the design of practical devcies that will use innovative UWB technology to transmit data over existing mains power cables. Our target is to produce a design of integrated circuit and assocaited UWB over powerline system that will enable data transmission rates of over 1 Gb/s.
