The aim of this research is to investigate methods for queuing traffic in the internet. Internet queues, known as buffers, store traffic at nodes in the network to be passed on to downstream nodes. However, sometimes, delaying traffic can be advantageous since it allows the downstream nodes more time to deal with their traffic and prevents them being overwhelmed by surges in traffic. Currently this is done with simple techniques known as the leaky bucket or token bucket which essentially just limit how quickly traffic can be transmitted.This research aims to use the mathematical technique known as Markov Chains to investigate how the statistical nature of the traffic affects queuing and hence how traffic can be delayed at buffers to intelligently improve queuing performance. Once the mathematics is better understood, computer simulations will be used to test the ideas in realistic scenarios.
