In single phase turbulent flows a remarkable and still intriguing finding is the reduction of frictional resistance (drag reduction) with the introduction of long chain polymers (Drag Reducing Agents, DRAB) in the fluid in very low concentrations. Compared to the huge amount of work available in single phase flows, there is little published on the use of DRAs in multiphase systems and this is restricted mainly to gas-liquid flows. Only recently it has been recognised that addition of DRAs in gas-liquid flows can bring significant benefits not only because of pressure drop reduction, as in single phase, but also because of changes in flow pattern boundaries. In contrast, there is currently no information available for liquid-liquid systems, despite their common occurrence in the oil and process industries.The proposed programme is a feasibility study on the advantages offered by the addition of drag reducing polymers into liquid-liquid flows in terms of flow pattern boundary changes and of pressure drop reduction. This study will reveal whether similar benefits can be expected and will form the basis of more extensive research in the area.
