Summary on Grant Application Form
During his stay at RAL, Prof. Mendonca proposes to develop theoretical studies relevant to the physics of PetaWatt laser produced plasmas. He will mainly focus on problems that can have direct implications to PW laser experiments, with the aim of improving the interpretation of existing experimental results, and of proposing new types of experiments to be explored in the future. In particular, he will work on four different kinds of problems relevant to the PW laser plasmas and to laboratory astrophysics. They are: particle acceleration and transport in laser produced plasmas; photon acceleration processes into the X ray domain; relativistic fireballs and fundamental physics with PW lasers. His wide knowledge of plasma physics informs his second mission - to deliver lectures at UK universities on laser-plasma interactions and to promote collaborations between UK and Portugese physicists. The development of these themes will be of benefit of the UK academic community.
