Summary on Grant Application Form |
Progress in the life sciences increasingly requires an understanding of how interactions within biological systems determine overall behaviour. New and innovative ways of addressing these issues come from the mathematical, engineering, computing and physical sciences. Conversely, the development of new mathematical, engineering, computing and physics based techniques is stimulated by the challenges of life sciences problems. The UK lacks appropriately trained scientists that can realize the potential of such interdisciplinary research. We propose a Doctoral Training Centre that builds upon on a successful 4-year interdisciplinary PhD programme offered by CoMPLEX: an interdisciplinary team that brings together mathematical/engineering/computer/physical scientists and life scientists in equal partnership.. The main research theme of the Centre will be the development of mathematical and physical science approaches to the analysis of complex behaviour in biological systems. Students will have two supervisors from complementary sides of the Life Sciences Interface, ensuring the biological relevance of the problems they address.
