Multicast communication allows a sender of electronic information to efficiently transmit information to a targeted group of receivers. Multicasting involves considerably less bandwidth than unicasting a separate message to each of the intended recipients. In a typical application, such as pay-TV, a major problem is that a multicast communication channel is generally fairly easy to intercept, but the information that is multicast should only be accessible to those recipients who have been authorised to receive it. Clearly use of multicasting in such applications is impractical without the provision of necessary security mechanisms. The best way to provide security is to encrypt the multicast information and only give authorised recipients the secret key necessary for decryption of the information. However, the fact that the group of authorised recipients is likely to be highly dynamic, with constant additions and deletions of members, means that the problem of ensuring that only the current authorised recipient set have the correct decryption key is an extremely complex one. This project intends to analyse this dynamic key management problem and propose efficient solutions that enable secure multicast communication, benefiting all users and designers of applications such as pay- TV and teleconferencing.
