The IMI proposal seeks to establish a rigorous linkage between new approaches to bioprocess design and development pioneered at UCL the distinctive issues of clinical trialing, financing and commercial development in the new biopharmaceutical sector. Currently these two needs are not connected effectively by such a formal planning framework and this means that processes are less efficient than they could be and in an increasing number of cases products fail as a direct result. The research draws upon established modelling expertise at UCL and industrial insight from partners. The research challenge is to create a framework to assist in achieving an appropriate balance between the process output, the clinical demands and company capacity to delivery across all sectors including process and associated resources. The work will include construction of predictive mass balance models, algorithms for the estimation of cost-of-goods and the linkage of these with forecasts of clinical requirements and schedules through an intelligent database.A parallel PhD project will investigate methods for the selection of best drug portfolios determined according to a range of objective functions including key process, financial and clinical metrics.
