Brian deformation during neurosurgery can result in errors of a centimeter or more when using pre-operative images (eg Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for intraoperative guidance. In this project we will quantify brain deformation using intraoperatively acquired MR image volumes (collected in collaboration with the University of Minnesota). We will compare deformation during resection with burr hole procedures (biopsy and functional surgery). We will determine which tissues change volume, and, using this information, build a finite element model to test whether visco-elastic or porosity models can predict the observed deformation fields. We will use the information learned from this modelling to devise deformation algorithms that will run sufficiently fast for intraoperative use. These algorithms will be tested using the interventinal MR data, and also intraoperative ultrasound collected from our collaborating neurosurgeons in London.
