Summary on Grant Application Form
The theme of the programme is the study of phase transitions in solid helium isotopic mixtures. We propose to study the properties of the pure phase-separated 3He solid droplets and the kinetics of the phase separation process in solid helium mixtures, including the role of fluctuations. We will investigate the size and the properties both solid and liquid droplets through spin diffusion, NMR and pressure measurements. We will investigate the phase separation line and the dynamics of the phase separation process. This will be extended to the critical point where the transition becomes second order, and where fluctuations are particularly important. The properties of 3He nanoclusters created by phase separation in restricted geometries will be studies. The size and nature of these will be investigated by spin diffusion and NMR relaxation measurements.By making NMR measurements on very dilute solutions of 3He in solid 4He we plan to investigate the suggested Bose-Einstein condensation of vacancies in solid 4He and the (apparently vital) role of the 3He in the process.
