Summary on Grant Application Form
The project combines direct numerical simulation and turbulence modelling for well-defined blunt trailing-edge problems, designed to address problems with current industrial practice of applying turbulence models near the trailing edge of aerofoils. Data will be generated using direct numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, and stored to facilitate the testing of turbulence models. Code validation will be against documented adverse-pressure gradient boundary-layer flows and unsteady near-wake solutions. Test cases for comparisons with turbulence models will include flows that are attached up to the trailing edge, flows with separation upstream of the trailing edge and flows with crossflow. Flows with identical boundary conditions as the direct simulations will be computed at Cambridge, BAe and Rolls-Royce. Differences between simulations and predictions will be investigated in detail by study of Reynolds-stress budgets. Models will be adjusted as necessary to better predict the flows.
