Accurate registration, on its own, does not provide the detailed and concise 3D representations that are required in many medical applications. Interpretation of the registered images is left to the observer. We believe that there are considerable opportunities for applying information theory to automating the generation of accurate and detailed 3D representations of the patient from multiple data sources. We propose that these will have additional applications in improving measurements of biological function by correcting for partial volume errors and automating the determination of pose of these 3D representations with respect to 2D images obtained during image guided interventions. To achieve this we will undertake research into using multi-channel information theory and Bayesian statistical approaches to combine information from sources measuring different physical properties. We intend, as far as possible, to devise fully automated algorithms for these tasks. The algorithms will be validated on an extensive database of example images that we have collected. The proposed work builds on the results of other successful EPSRC funded projects in our laboratory.
