The Mullard Space Science Laboratory has been developing a cryogen free, 0.01K magnetic cooler for use in space. It is proposed to use the techniques and knowledge from this programme to underpin the development of a cooler suitable for deployment in more physics laboratories. While this application is distinctly different from that for space which requires the optimisation for low mass, low power and ultra high reliability, much of the developed technology is directly applicable. Problems such as the risk of quenching have been resolved.The proto-type cooler will provide a turn-key facility at an affordable price (after commercial production in UK industry) that will replace dilution refrigerators in many applications. It will provide fast turn round for experiments operating at <0.1K (<24 hours) and the freedom from handling liquid cryogens. It is expected that the availability of such a cooler will significantly enhance low temperature research in the UK.The cooler will be developed and commissioned at MSSL and then delivered to Cambridge where it will be used in a condensed matter physics programme.
