Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aim is to develop and demonstrate the technology for a new design of high efficiency, low cost, concentrating BIPV modules that can be manufactured cost effectivley in high volume. The technology will comprise of a high efficiency laser grooved buried contact (LGBC) solar cell which will be mounted in a low cost module. Currently BIPV modules are designed to be roof mounted to take advantage of the sun facing inclined angle of the roof. However, the module to be developed in this project will be thin, and will be designed to be mounted vertically on external building walls. It will concentrate sunlight, using novel moulded refracting elements at a concentration of around 2-3X onto the high efficiency LGBC cell. The development of a low cost production process will be demonstrated at a pilot production scale and the potential for a 40% reduction at the PV system level will be verified.
