The food system produces significant quantities of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and yet there is no single body, statutory or non-statutory, which focuses on tackling this problem.It is therefore propose to establish an interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral Lower Carbon Food Research Network to undertake, catalyse, coordinate, and communicate research focusing on ways of achieving absolute reductions in UK food chain GHGs. The focus will be on the whole food life cycle, from agriculture through to waste disposal. The approach will be multi-disciplinary and five main research themes will be considered:1. Methodologies for quantifying UK food chain GHG emissions2. Technologies for food chain GHG reduction3. Policies for achieving food GHG reductions4. Approaches to changing consumer dietary behaviour5. Measures to ensure compatibility between GHG reduction and wider sustainability objectives.Research findings will be used to inform a series of lower carbon visions, and to develop a plan of action outlining what approaches may be needed to achieve the desired GHG reductions.Over 15 organisations have already confirmed their wish to be involved in the Network. These include the Departments for Trade and Industry and Transport, Marks & Spencer, National Farmers Union, Institute of Grocery Distribution, Greenpeace, Transport 2000 and several universities.
