The programme involves the design, synthesis and characterisation of novel synthetic molecular rotors and motors. The systems will be based on mechanically interlocked architectures (catenanes and rotaxanes) and assembled through hydrogen bonding and metal ion coordination. The same interactions can subsequently be used to control rotational motion using various stimuli (light, heat, electrons, pH, polarity) under various mechanisms (energy and information ratchets). Model studies on molecules in solution will be used to determine which property effects are possible through this type of submolecular motion. This will be used to design systems that work on surfaces or in films so that the effects of molecular level motion are transmitted to the outside world.
