Summary on Grant Application Form
Our current understanding of the internal structure of atomic nuclei is based on the concept of shell structure which is defined by the nature of the average or 'mean' field which is produced by the average of all the inter-nucleon reactions within the system. The concept of the nuclear shell model is more than 50 years old and has been an invaluable tool in explaining a wide range of experimental variables, most spectacularly, the presence of 'magic numbers' which correspond to closed shells of protons and neutrons. The overall understanding of nuclear systems in which the proton and neutron separation energies are approximately equal has been well established using this shell model type picture. However, over the course of the last decade, experimental techniques have evolved considerably, particularly in allowing the synthesis and study of exotic, radioactive nuclei with significant proton or neutron excesses as compared to the stable isotopes. It has become clear that the standard shell closures which are observed in nuclei which lie along the line of beta stability, become modified in systems with an increasing neutron excess. This can lead to a rearrangement of the single particle orbitals in the nuclear mean-field protential and an erosion of the standard shell closures observed for near-stable isotones. This grant requests funds for a visiting fellowship for Dr. Faisal Azaiez, an expert in the study of structural properties of neutron-rich nuclei using both stable and radiaoctive beams. The VF will allow the UK nuclear structure community access to Dr. Azaiez's expertise with the aim of developing new science initiatives to investigate nuclear structure properties using state-or-the-art instrumentation such as the PRISMA heavy-ion spectrometer, the GSI Fragment Separator (via the RISING-NUSTAR project) and future perspectives utilising the AGATA gamma-ray Compton tracking array.
