Summary on Grant Application Form
We present a new and exciting coordinated research programme linking chemical biology, chemical physics and glycobiology. It involves a combination of molecular synthesis, to create the key `building blocks' in a range of target oligosaccharides and their glyco-conjugates; infrared laser spectroscopy over a very broad spectral range, to probe their 'vibrational signatures'- free of the environment, or interacting with it in a controlled way within `custom-made' molecular complexes; and computational chemistry, including the development of new theoretical methods, to translate these into their molecular and conformational structures and determine their relative energies and free energies. A direct route to the future determination of inter-conformer barrier heights, and molecular flexibility is offered by the recent discovery of vibrationally-promoted, conformational inter-conversion.
