Mathematical modelling has proved a very useful tool in improving process control and product quality in many processes (eg. casting and foundry operations, production of single crystals of Ni-superalloys, continuous casting of steel and welding).The predictions of these models has been found to improve when accurate data for the thermo-physical properties of the alloy are used in the model. An enormous amount of data are needed for the many alloys used in industrial processes involving the solidification of alloys. One way of tackling this problem is to develop models to calculate accurate property values from chemical composition which is available on a routine bias. This project seeks to use the special and individual expertise of Prof Mukai (as a Visiting Researcher) to develop models providing1. Accurate values (within 2%) of the densities of nickel-based superalloys and to extend it other alloy systems2:. Reliable values for the surface tension and its temperature dependency for multi- component commercial alloys (such as Ni- superalloys, steels etc.) a key element of this project is to resolve current differences in the calculated values of soluble oxygen in the alloy since it has a critical and dramatic effect on the surface tension.3. Diffusion coefficients in commercial alloys from chemical composition
