The WISER project will be a series of 25 workshops on Earthquake Engineering Research run in England and Wales for members of the Women's Institutes(W I). Each two-hour workshop will include a presentation entitled Can we Stop the Death and Destruction from Earthquakes? and a handson activity called Shaking Spaghetti Structures . The presentation will cover:The nature of earthquakes and their effects on people and infrastructure.How research improves the understanding of the seismic response of structures and develops techniques for making structures earthquake resistant. Details of the presenter's own research in reservoir facilities and seismic protection.The value of the research to societies around the world and in the UK.The Shaking Spaghetti Structures will be a competition giving the audience the opportunity to experience some of the science and challenge behind earthquake engineering. Working in teams, they will be asked to strengthen small model buildings, made of spaghetti, so that they can resist an earthquake generated on a small earthquake simulator. Only spaghetti, paper, string and glue can be used for the strengthening. Beforehand, the presenter will demonstrate various strengthening techniques. The challenge looks for efficient use of materials, so the lightest model to resist the generated earthquake will be the winner.
