Breaking waves have been blamed for damaging many coastal structures, in part because of the propagation of impact pressures into water filled cracks. This proposal supplements a current interactive programme of field, model and theoretical investigations that has increased both knowledge and understanding of this problem but more data, particularly field data, is required to take full advantage of these advances. Currently, field data is being collected at an exposed site on Admiralty Breakwater, Alderney by 49 transducers that measure waves, impact pressures, aeration, pressure propagation into cracks and structural response. As things stand, all the equipment will have to be removed from site this summer and, once removed, reinstatement there or elsewhere would be both expensive and extremely unlikely. Thus, it is proposed that field-data collection should continue for a further winter season together with laboratory tests designed to throw additional light on the scale effects present in typical freshwater models. Insight into the fundamentals of the various processes will continue to be gained from the mathematical model studies whilst the new data will be used to improve the models. Results of value to practising coastal engineers will be presented and comparisons made with current design methods including those used to assess the effects of blast loading.
