Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new type of porous material, with frameworks based on metal ions and bridging organic molecules. Whereas all previously reported syntheses of crystalline MOFs involve crystallisation of the product from solution, we recently found that that one example could be made by simply grinding together a solid metal salt and solid organic ligand in the absence of solvent. The product was also obtained in high yield, after only a few minutes, and without any external heating. We seek to fully investigate the scope of this unusual and potentially useful method of synthesis by establishing the effects of variables such as the metal ion, anion, subsituting ligand and degree of hydration/solvation of the starting materials. We also aim to gain new insights into solid-solid reactions in the context of coordination chemistry, and solvent templating effects in the formation of MOFs.
